Dmytro is a researcher at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine. Since 1989 he was a member of the youth section of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, where he published and distributed self-published anti-Soviet literature. In 1990 he took an active part in the Revolution on Granite.

Originally from the Donetsk region, Dmytro currently lives in Kyiv. He is a leading scholar at the Institute for Holodomor Research, doctor of historical sciences, professor, writer, and bandurist. As a lecturer at the Faculty of History of Donetsk State University in the beginning of the 1990s, the disintegration of the Soviet Union dramatically enlarged
